Double Bass Teachers

Alexandra Giller

Alexandra began playing double bass at the age of eleven. She holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma of Professional Music Practice from the University of Tasmania, and a Master of Arts (Music performance—classical) from Monash Univeristy. Over the course of these degrees and as a private student, Alexandre has been fortunate enough to study with Max McBride, Damien Eckersley, Stuart Thomson, Duncan McTier, Thomas Martin, and Joseph Niederhammer, all of whom have had a profound impact on her as a musician.

Alexandra’s decision to become a musician came when she joined the Melbourne Youth Orchestra in 2006. Her participation in programs run by Melbourne Youth Music and the Australian Youth Orchestra, in addition to Tasmania’s Australian International Summer Orchestra Institute (AISOI), since that time have shaped her career and attitudes to music. She has been performing professionally in Melbourne since 2008, with engagements with a range of ensembles. She regularly performs as principal double bass of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic. She has also been working interstate since 2012, a highlight being working with the English National Ballet on their 2012 Sydney tour.

Alexandra has been teaching double bass privately since 2011, and is currently one of two double bass tutors on Border Music Camp.
