Pre-Instrumental Classes: Voices vs Instruments

We are often asked, "Do you use instruments in your classes?"
The answer is, well, the answer is actually 'Yes....and Yes"

At Music Works Magic we ascribe to the Kodaly philosophy that the voice is our own instrument, and therefore our first. When we sing tunefully, and therefore listen, recall and emulate the sounds that we hear, then we are ready to begin learning a musical instrument - Good Musicians Always Sing! The main focus in our pre-instrumental classes then, is to provide your children with the musical experiences that enable them to:

  • firstly, hear the sounds that their teacher makes
  • then hear their own voice as they try to replicate what they have heard
  • develop the skill of inner hearing, or audiation - the process where we hear the sounds in our heads
  • eventually sing in tune!

Our classes are therefore live and interactive. Once the children have a large enough repertoire to play along to, our teachers introduce both tuned, and non-tuned, musical instruments in a carefully guided fashion. These can include drums, shakers, bells, triangles, maracas and slide whistles, as well as a great range of other percussion instruments. For example, this term the older students have been using kazoos.
